Global cryptocurrency markets remained under pressure on Tuesday as Bitcoin held close to $83,300 while Ethereum, Solana, XRP and a wide range of smaller cryptocurrencies recorded considerably steeper losses amid a broader retreat from risk-sensitive assets.

Bitcoin traded at around $83,300.65, up roughly 0.66 percent over 24 hours, with its market capitalization near $1.67 trillion and daily trading volume at approximately $31.88 billion, according to CoinMarketCap. The cryptocurrency traded between $80,962.52 and $84,061.10 over the preceding 24 hours.

Bitcoin limits losses

Bitcoin’s comparatively modest decline contrasted sharply with the broader cryptocurrency market, where selling accelerated across major and mid-cap tokens.

The global digital-asset market capitalization stood at around $2.79 trillion, down 1.06 percent over 24 hours, while total trading volume climbed 36.82 percent to $91.23 billion, indicating heavier turnover during the decline. Bitcoin dominance increased to 59.94 percent, up 0.56 percentage points over the day.

CoinMarketCap’s Fear and Greed Index stood at 55, placing sentiment in neutral territory, while its Altcoin Season Index was at 57 out of 100.

Derivatives activity showed considerably greater stress. Total cryptocurrency liquidations reached about $796.48 million, with long positions accounting for $669.57 million and short positions for $126.91 million. The imbalance indicates that traders positioned for rising prices absorbed most of the forced deleveraging.

Bitcoin’s resilience also comes amid a broader change in leverage. CoinMarketCap researchers cited by Barron’s found that total open interest across global cryptocurrency derivatives had risen 15 percent over the previous week, while Bitcoin-specific open interest fell 6 percent.

Alice Liu, CoinMarketCap’s head of research, said the shift suggests investors are increasingly holding Bitcoin through spot exposure rather than relying on leverage, while more speculative positioning has migrated toward alternative cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin nevertheless remains down around 3.5 percent over seven days, leaving the asset below recent highs even as it continues to outperform many of the largest altcoins.

Altcoin losses deepen

Ethereum fell to around $2,497.34, losing 1.81 percent over 24 hours and about 7.97 percent over seven days. Its market capitalization stood at approximately $304.92 billion, with daily volume of $14.84 billion.

BNB declined around 1.49 percent to $738.26, extending its seven-day loss to about 5.77 percent.

XRP fell more sharply, dropping 2.88 percent to about $1.35, with its weekly decline reaching 10.30 percent. Its market capitalization stood at approximately $85.7 billion and 24-hour volume at $2.68 billion.

Solana remained one of the weakest major cryptocurrencies, falling 4.27 percent to $106.15. It was down 11.77 percent over seven days, while its market capitalization declined to approximately $62.67 billion. Solana traded between $102.63 and $110.94 during the preceding 24 hours.

Cardano fell 6.96 percent to $0.2328, extending its weekly loss to 16.61 percent. Dogecoin dropped 3.63 percent to $0.08362 and was down 12.65 percent over seven days.

TRON proved comparatively resilient, declining 0.88 percent to $0.3285, while Chainlink dropped 3.41 percent to $12.82. Hyperliquid lost 4.21 percent to $82.09 and was down 12.53 percent for the week.

Zcash remained highly volatile, falling 7.65 percent to $1,189.47, while Monero bucked the broader decline with a modest gain of around 0.6 percent to $534.39.

The divergence reinforces the extent to which Tuesday’s selling has been concentrated in higher-beta assets rather than Bitcoin itself.

Smaller tokens retreat

Losses spread across smaller cryptocurrencies as investors reduced exposure farther down the risk curve.

NEAR Protocol traded around $5.04, while Quant was near $206.12 and Ethena around $0.21. Hedera traded near $0.09, Sui around $1.04 and Litecoin approximately $60.72, according to CoinMarketCap’s market rankings.

Uniswap traded close to $7.27 following a particularly weak seven-day period, while Bitcoin Cash fell to approximately $268.31. Bittensor was near $273.30, Shiba Inu remained around $0.000005 and Cronos traded near $0.06.

The losses follow a period in which leverage has increasingly shifted toward altcoins. That positioning can amplify both gains and declines because leveraged positions may be forced to close when prices move sharply against traders.

The current market structure provides one explanation for Bitcoin’s smaller decline. With less leverage concentrated in BTC than across the wider crypto complex, forced selling can have a disproportionate effect on smaller assets.

CoinMarketCap’s own market analysis showed the overall cryptocurrency capitalization dropping sharply during earlier phases of Tuesday’s decline, alongside heavy long liquidations and an increase in trading volume.

Stablecoins remained considerably less volatile. Tether traded near $0.9986 and USDC around $0.9998, while DAI, Ethena USDe, World Liberty Financial USD1 and Global Dollar remained close to their respective $1 pegs.

Tether Gold traded around $4,180.74, tracking historically elevated bullion prices, while UNUS SED LEO remained close to $8.90. Other tokens including Canton, OKB, Gram and PayPal USD also traded close to the levels recorded earlier in Tuesday’s session.

ETF flows weaken

Institutional Bitcoin demand provided another source of caution after U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds returned to net outflows.

Farside Investors data show the funds recorded $65.4 million in combined net outflows on October 12, with the entire withdrawal coming from BlackRock’s IBIT. The other tracked funds recorded no net movement that day.

That followed substantially larger withdrawals earlier in October. The funds recorded $484.9 million in net outflows on October 7 and another $244.1 million on October 8, before returning to a modest $21.1 million inflow on October 9.

The latest ETF data therefore point to uneven institutional flows rather than a continuous withdrawal from Bitcoin.

Broader market conditions remain equally important. Global equities declined on Tuesday as investors questioned the sustainability of AI-related valuations and reacted to signs of stronger competition from Chinese memory-chip producer CXMT.

South Korea’s KOSPI fell more than 5 percent, Nasdaq futures dropped around 0.7 percent and investors shifted toward U.S. Treasuries. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to around 5.187 percent, while Brent crude fell to about $104.76 a barrel.

Lower Treasury yields can support cryptocurrencies by reducing the relative attraction of interest-bearing assets, but the broader decline in technology and other risk-sensitive markets has kept sentiment cautious.

Macro risks dominate

The International Monetary Fund added to concerns around global financial markets on Tuesday, warning that apparent resilience should not be confused with safety.

In its latest Global Financial Stability Report, the IMF identified an AI-related market correction as one potential source of financial stress if investment or profit expectations disappoint. It also highlighted rising sovereign bond yields, elevated leverage and vulnerabilities among nonbank financial institutions.

That backdrop matters for cryptocurrency because digital assets remain closely exposed to global liquidity conditions, investor risk appetite and changes in bond yields.

Attention now turns to the U.S. consumer price index report due Wednesday, which could influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy. Futures markets were pricing an 80.6 percent probability that the Fed will leave rates unchanged later in October, up from 51 percent a month earlier.
